The Jharkhand unit of the Indian National Congress has urged the Central Government to honour veteran tribal leader Shibu Soren with the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award. The party has also appealed for the establishment of a tribal university named after Soren to recognise his decades-long contribution to tribal empowerment and social justice.
The demand was made during a press briefing by senior Congress leaders in Ranchi. Party officials stated that Soren, popularly referred to as Guruji, has been instrumental in shaping the identity and political voice of tribal communities in the region. They added that recognising his legacy with a national honour would be a “historic step” towards acknowledging the struggles of indigenous populations in India.
“Shibu Soren’s entire life has been devoted to the upliftment of tribal society. His role in advocating for land rights, forest protection, and the creation of Jharkhand as a separate state cannot be overlooked. The Congress party strongly believes that his name should be considered for the Bharat Ratna,” said Rajesh Thakur, President of the Jharkhand Pradesh Congress Committee.
He also proposed the formation of a central tribal university bearing Soren’s name, which could serve as a centre for education, research, and cultural preservation. “This institution would offer new academic opportunities for tribal youth while honouring the legacy of a leader who devoted his life to their cause,” Thakur added.
Shibu Soren, now 80, began his political journey in the 1970s, focusing on issues that directly affected tribal people, including land alienation, socio-economic inequality, and displacement. He was a key figure in the movement that led to the creation of Jharkhand in 2000 and has served multiple terms as Chief Minister and as a Union Minister. His grassroots activism and leadership through the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) earned him widespread respect among tribal communities across eastern India.
The Congress party’s proposal has received support from various social groups and tribal organisations, though a formal response from the Union Government is awaited. No immediate comments were made by leaders from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Political analysts believe that this move by the Congress could also be part of its strategy to consolidate tribal support ahead of the upcoming Jharkhand Assembly elections. With tribal identity and representation becoming prominent issues in recent national politics, the demand for recognising Shibu Soren’s contribution has gained added relevance.
