Thackeray Meets Congress Leadership in Delhi to Discuss Opposition Unity and VP Election

Uddhav Thackeray Delhi visit

New Delhi, August 7 – Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray met with senior Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge in New Delhi on Wednesday, signaling renewed coordination efforts among opposition parties ahead of the upcoming Vice Presidential election. The meeting, which was held behind closed doors, has generated political interest amid talks of a unified strategy within the INDIA bloc.

While no official statement was issued following the discussions, sources familiar with the matter indicated that the leaders exchanged views on the political situation at the national level, including the process for selecting a consensus candidate for the Vice President’s post. The conversation also reportedly included an assessment of the alliance’s performance in the recent general elections and plans to strengthen collaboration ahead of upcoming electoral challenges.

This marks a significant outreach effort by Thackeray, who has been vocal about the need for a strong and cohesive opposition front. His visit to Delhi comes at a time when the INDIA bloc is aiming to present a united front against the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in future parliamentary and state elections.

In addition to the Vice Presidential election, the leaders are believed to have discussed internal coordination mechanisms, shared campaign strategies, and the importance of maintaining momentum following the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. Despite the NDA’s return to power, the INDIA bloc made notable gains, especially in key states such as Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal.

Political analysts view Thackeray’s meeting with Gandhi and Kharge as a step toward consolidating opposition efforts both at the central and regional levels. Maharashtra, where the Shiv Sena (UBT), Congress, and NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) are major players, is expected to witness heightened political activity as the state heads toward assembly elections in 2026.

The Congress party, which has taken an active role in leading opposition unity efforts, has been holding a series of discussions with its partners to prepare for key parliamentary roles and policy challenges. Rahul Gandhi, in particular, has intensified engagement with alliance leaders following the general election, focusing on sustaining cooperation and addressing internal differences.

Meanwhile, BJP leaders downplayed the significance of the meeting. Party spokespersons called the engagement “routine” and emphasized that the NDA remains firmly in control, both in Parliament and across major states.

Despite such statements, the meeting between Thackeray and Congress leadership is being seen as a clear message that opposition parties are actively working to stay relevant and influential in shaping national discourse.
