12 August,2025— Experts from the National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) have commenced a search operation to locate 66 people reported missing following sudden flash floods in Uttarkashi. The floods, caused by intense monsoon rains and snowmelt, triggered widespread damage across the region.
The NGRI team is employing satellite imagery, remote sensing, and hydrological data to assist rescue teams in identifying the most affected and high-risk areas. Local authorities have highlighted the challenges posed by difficult terrain and disrupted communications.
District officials confirmed ongoing coordination between rescue teams and NGRI experts to expedite search and relief efforts. The Indian Meteorological Department had issued rainfall warnings earlier, but the severity of the floods exceeded expectations.
Relief measures including temporary shelters and medical aid are underway to support displaced residents. This incident highlights the increasing frequency of extreme weather events in the Himalayas and the need for improved disaster preparedness.
The search continues as authorities and scientific experts work together to locate those missing and provide assistance to affected communities.
