13 August,2025-Former Indian cricketer Suresh Raina appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in New Delhi on 13 August 2025 for questioning in connection with an alleged illegal betting app investigation. The statement was recorded under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
The ED is investigating several online betting platforms, including 1xBet, accused of operating through alternative brand names and using digital advertisements to direct users to unauthorized gambling sites. Officials allege that these platforms misrepresent themselves as skill-based games while functioning as illegal betting operations.
Raina is one of several high-profile individuals questioned in connection with these promotions. Other celebrities who have been summoned include Harbhajan Singh, Yuvraj Singh, Sonu Sood, and Urvashi Rautela. Earlier this year, authorities had questioned these personalities over endorsements of banned betting platforms such as 1xBet, FairPlay, Parimatch, and Lotus365.
Investigations indicate that India’s illegal online betting sector is substantial, attracting hundreds of millions of users. Officials estimate that the operations may have led to significant tax losses for the government.
During the questioning, Raina was asked about the nature of his endorsement deals, payment structures, and whether he had verified the legality of the platforms before promoting them. The former cricketer has not made any public comment on the matter.
The ED’s inquiry underscores the scrutiny of celebrity endorsements in potentially unlawful businesses and highlights the importance of legal compliance in promotional activities. Authorities have indicated that the investigation may expand as more individuals associated with these platforms are examined.
