Pune Metro’s 41 km Corridor to Become City’s Longest Pending Centre’s Nod

Pune Metro’s Longest Proposed Route

August 14, 2025 — The proposed Bhakti Shakti–Wakad–Nashik Phata–Chakan metro corridor is set to become the longest route in Pune’s metro network once it receives clearance from the Central Government. The 41-kilometre stretch, detailed in the recently completed Detailed Project Report (DPR) by Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (Maha-Metro), will connect key areas of Pimpri-Chinchwad to the industrial hub of Chakan, transforming regional connectivity.

Route and Project Details

The fully elevated line will originate at Bhakti Shakti in Nigdi and terminate at Chakan, passing through Wakad, Nashik Phata, Pimple Saudagar, Bhosari, and other high-density zones. The corridor will have 31 stations and is projected to cost ₹10,383.89 crore. Designed for speeds up to 80 km/h, the line is expected to handle 3.38 lakh passengers daily by 2031, with ridership projected to increase to 7.81 lakh by 2061.

Hemant Sonawane, Executive Director (Public Relations) at Maha-Metro, said the route will significantly boost commuter convenience and reduce travel time across the region. “This corridor will connect major residential and industrial hubs, making it a vital addition to Pune’s urban transport network,” he stated.

Connectivity and Integration

The proposed line will integrate with the Hinjawadi–Shivajinagar metro line at Wakad through a dedicated skywalk, allowing easy transfers for IT professionals and daily commuters. At Sant Tukaramnagar on the Nashik Phata section, it will connect to the Swargate–Pimpri-Chinchwad corridor, enabling seamless multi-line travel within the metro system.

The corridor’s design also aims to decongest existing road traffic, particularly along the busy Pune–Nashik highway, and reduce travel times between industrial belts and residential suburbs.

Economic and Urban Impact

Chakan, a rapidly growing industrial hub housing automobile and manufacturing giants, will gain its first direct metro connectivity, improving accessibility for thousands of workers. Pimpri-Chinchwad’s dense residential localities such as Wakad and Pimple Saudagar will also see improved last-mile connectivity, likely boosting real estate and commercial growth in the area.

Urban planners have noted that the corridor could play a key role in balancing Pune’s urban sprawl by distributing economic activity and reducing vehicular congestion in central zones.

Awaiting Central Approval

The DPR has been submitted to the state government and will now be forwarded to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs for final approval. Once sanctioned, the project will be part of Pune Metro’s Phase II expansion, which also includes new lines such as Vanaz–Chandni Chowk, Ramwadi–Wagholi, and SNDT–Warje–Manik Bagh, along with extensions towards Khadakwasla, Hadapsar, and Kharadi.

If approved and executed as planned, the Bhakti Shakti–Wakad–Nashik Phata–Chakan corridor will stand as a landmark in Pune’s public transport history — a high-capacity, high-speed link bridging the city’s industrial and residential landscapes.
