August 20,2025: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was attacked on Wednesday during a public grievance meeting at her residence, leading to the immediate arrest of the accused.
The attacker has been identified as Rajesh Bhai Khimji Bhai Sakriya, a resident of Gujarat. Early accounts claimed that Gupta had been slapped, though officials later clarified that she was grabbed by the hand and her hair was pulled in the incident.
Following the assault, the Chief Minister was taken to a hospital for a routine medical check-up. Doctors confirmed that she is in stable condition and has not sustained any major injuries.
Police have registered a case under Section 109(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), treating the matter as an attempt to murder. A senior officer stated that investigators are looking into all possible motives behind the attack.
Family members of the accused have put forward differing explanations. His mother alleged that he was upset over a recent Supreme Court decision on stray dogs, while other reports suggest his anger may have stemmed from a court case involving a jailed relative. Authorities are verifying these claims.
Security footage reviewed by the police shows Sakriya near the Chief Minister’s residence prior to the incident, raising suspicions of pre-planning. The Chief Minister’s Office has described the matter as serious and suggested the possibility of a broader conspiracy.
Leaders across the political spectrum condemned the attack, terming it a security failure. Demands have been raised for stronger safeguards for elected officials, particularly during open hearings where members of the public are given direct access.
The accused remains in police custody and will be presented before a magistrate after questioning. Additional security arrangements have been put in place at the Chief Minister’s residence.
Officials close to Gupta stated that she is recovering and expected to resume official engagements soon.
