August 21,2025: In a significant development for India’s electronics sector, Apple Inc. is set to manufacture all models of its upcoming iPhone 17 series in India. This will be the first time the company produces its entire range, including the Pro versions, outside China from the very beginning of launch.
According to industry sources, the move signals Apple’s continued efforts to diversify its supply chain amid growing global demand and geopolitical uncertainties surrounding China. The decision also underlines India’s increasing role as a major hub in the global smartphone manufacturing network.
Apple has already been assembling select iPhone models in India through contract manufacturers such as Foxconn, Wistron, and Pegatron. However, earlier production was limited to base models and began months after their global launch. The forthcoming iPhone 17 series, expected in 2025, will mark the first occasion when production in India coincides with global timelines and includes all variants.
Analysts say the shift could substantially boost India’s electronics exports, which have seen sharp growth in recent years. Apple’s exports from India reportedly crossed $12 billion in the financial year 2023–24, driven mainly by the iPhone 15 series. With the iPhone 17 lineup set for full-scale production in the country, exports are expected to rise further, enhancing India’s position in global trade.
The development also carries wider economic and political implications. For New Delhi, it is a strong endorsement of the government’s Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, which aims to strengthen local manufacturing and reduce dependence on imports. For Apple, it reflects a cautious but firm strategy to reduce reliance on China, where factors such as rising labour costs, strict regulations, and tensions with the United States have posed challenges.
Industry observers note that producing Pro models in India will require more advanced capabilities, including precision manufacturing and complex component sourcing. The transition will likely involve significant investment in infrastructure and training. Nevertheless, it is viewed as a necessary step for Apple as it seeks to secure a stable supply chain and meet the rising demand from both domestic and global markets.
Market experts believe the move will also benefit India’s growing ecosystem of component suppliers, logistics providers, and skilled labour. “This is not just about assembling phones; it is about developing an entire value chain within India,” an analyst said.
The iPhone 17 series is expected to launch in the second half of 2025. If production proceeds as planned, India will emerge as the only country outside China to serve as a primary manufacturing base for Apple’s flagship devices at the time of release.
With this decision, Apple appears to be setting a precedent for future launches, aligning with its long-term strategy of diversifying operations while supporting India’s aspirations to become a global manufacturing hub.
