August 21, 2025: The Ministry of Railways has announced a full-scale upgradation of the Passenger Reservation System (PRS), aimed at enhancing its capacity to manage significantly higher ticketing demand. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw informed Parliament that the current system, which is capable of booking 25,000 tickets per minute, will be strengthened to handle a substantially larger volume of transactions.
The proposed overhaul will include modernization of hardware, software, network infrastructure, and security systems. The Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS) will supervise the implementation of this project, which is expected to be completed by December 2025. Officials stated that the upgrade is part of a larger initiative to modernize Indian Railways’ digital infrastructure and ensure a smoother booking experience for passengers.
Alongside the PRS enhancement, the Railways has launched the RailOne mobile application, which consolidates multiple railway services into a single platform. The app allows passengers to book reserved and unreserved tickets, track train movements in real-time, check PNR status, and access other facilities, thus making the ticketing process more accessible and convenient.
To further improve security and transparency, the Ministry has introduced Aadhaar-based verification for Tatkal ticket bookings. From July 1, 2025, passengers will be required to link their Aadhaar numbers to IRCTC accounts for booking Tatkal tickets. Additionally, reservation charts will now be prepared eight hours before train departure, providing better clarity for waitlisted passengers.
Experts believe that the upgraded PRS will substantially reduce ticketing delays and improve availability, particularly during peak travel periods. With increased capacity and advanced technological platforms, Indian Railways aims to introduce additional features in the future, further enhancing passenger convenience.
The Ministry emphasized that these measures reflect Indian Railways’ ongoing commitment to providing a more efficient, passenger-centric travel experience. Officials expressed optimism that the modernization will meet the growing demands of India’s rail travelers and strengthen the reliability of the nation’s ticketing system.
