ISRO Reveals Model of India’s First Space Station, Targets 2028 Launch

ISRO Bharatiya Antariksh Station

August 22, 2025: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) unveiled a model of the Bharatiya Antariksh Station (BAS) during National Space Day celebrations in New Delhi on Thursday. The announcement highlights India’s growing capabilities in space technology and its ambition to operate a modular space station.

The first module, BAS-01, is planned for launch in 2028, and ISRO intends to assemble a five-module station by 2035. The space station will serve as a platform for conducting scientific experiments, testing advanced technologies, and fostering potential collaboration with international partners.

The station’s design includes a core module, a laboratory module, a base module, and a common working module. Each module will be launched and connected sequentially, with BAS-01 forming the foundation of the station. The facility is expected to support research in microgravity, space medicine, and satellite maintenance operations.

An ISRO spokesperson said, “The unveiling of BAS demonstrates India’s commitment to advancing its presence in space and enhancing its scientific capabilities.” The station will also complement India’s Gaganyaan human spaceflight program, with earlier missions providing critical technology validation for constructing and operating the station.

Space experts noted that the Bharatiya Antariksh Station could open avenues for cooperation with other countries in space research. Once fully operational, India will join the small number of nations that maintain a functional space station, strengthening its position in global space exploration.

The event was described as a major milestone in India’s space journey. With the first module expected to launch in 2028 and the entire station ready by 2035, the Bharatiya Antariksh Station represents India’s strategic vision to expand its footprint in low Earth orbit and advance scientific discovery.
