Cloudburst in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli Triggers Floods, Rescue Efforts Underway

Chamoli Tharali flash flood aftermath

August 23,2025 — Heavy rains in Uttarakhand triggered a cloudburst in Chamoli district’s Tharali region late Friday, setting off flash floods that caused severe destruction. Officials confirmed that one person lost their life, while another remains untraced. Rescue forces are continuing operations despite damaged roads and widespread debris.

The sudden downpour sent torrents of water rushing through villages, sweeping away soil and stones from the surrounding slopes. Several houses were buried, forcing families to take shelter on higher ground. Crops and farmland also suffered extensive damage, raising concerns about the livelihoods of residents in the affected areas.

Personnel from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the Army were quickly deployed to the site. Search teams are clearing paths and working to recover the missing person. “The situation remains difficult, but our teams are actively engaged in providing safety and relief,” an SDRF official said.

Road access to Tharali has been badly hit, with landslides blocking major routes and cutting off essential supplies. Earthmovers and machinery have been deployed to reopen the roads, though continuous rainfall has slowed clearance work. Authorities are prioritizing the evacuation of stranded villagers and restoring communication lines.

Eyewitness accounts describe the sudden force of the disaster. “The sound was deafening, and within minutes, water and boulders rushed into our homes,” said a local farmer, adding that families escaped with little more than the clothes they were wearing. Relief camps have since been arranged in schools and community buildings, where food, blankets, and medical aid are being distributed.

Chamoli district has faced repeated natural calamities in recent years, a reflection of the fragile Himalayan ecosystem. Environmental experts have cautioned that unregulated construction and climate change have made hill districts increasingly prone to such extreme weather events. The pattern of erratic rainfall, they warn, is likely to continue.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed sorrow over the tragedy and assured full support to the affected families. “Rescue and relief are being carried out with urgency. Every possible assistance will be provided to those impacted,” he said in a statement.

Officials have advised residents to remain alert as further rainfall is expected in the coming days. Rescue teams remain on the ground, working under challenging conditions to locate the missing individual and provide relief to those displaced by the floods.
