August 23, 2025: A tour bus carrying 54 passengers from Niagara Falls to New York City overturned on Interstate 90 near Pembroke yesterday, resulting in five fatalities and multiple injuries.
Authorities reported that the bus lost control and rolled onto its side, leaving passengers trapped inside. Several individuals were ejected from the vehicle, while others suffered serious injuries requiring immediate medical attention. Local hospitals received over 40 passengers, treating a range of injuries including fractures, head trauma, and other physical wounds.
The victims included tourists from several countries, including India, China, and the Philippines. Emergency teams employed translators to ensure proper communication with the injured.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has begun investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash. Early reports indicate that the accident was not caused by mechanical failure or driver impairment. The bus, operated by M&Y Tour Inc., had no previous safety violations.
The incident caused major traffic disruptions on Interstate 90, with portions of the highway closed for several hours while emergency crews worked to clear the scene. Officials praised the prompt response of first responders, including ambulances and medical helicopters, which assisted in transporting severely injured passengers to nearby hospitals.
Governor Kathy Hochul and Senator Chuck Schumer expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and urged the public to follow safety precautions while traveling.
The crash has raised renewed attention on passenger safety and the importance of wearing seat belts on buses. Although New York law mandates seat belts on newer charter buses, many passengers were reportedly not wearing them when the accident occurred.
Authorities continue to investigate the incident and are calling for travelers to remain cautious, adhere to safety regulations, and ensure seat belts are fastened to prevent similar tragedies.
