August 26, 2025: In a landmark development, Elon Musk’s satellite internet company, Starlink, has received a Unified License from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to operate in India. The approval is a major step forward for the company’s planned entry into the Indian market, with services expected to commence by late 2025 or early 2026.
Under the terms of the license, Starlink has agreed to comply with strict security and data localization norms. The company will not mirror or decrypt data of Indian users on servers outside the country, aligning with India’s cybersecurity regulations.
Starlink has also partnered with the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) to employ Aadhaar-based electronic Know Your Customer (e-KYC) verification. This move is expected to facilitate seamless onboarding for millions of users, ensuring that services meet both regulatory and security standards.
Despite receiving the license, Starlink must complete further regulatory requirements before beginning commercial operations. The company is awaiting spectrum allocation from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), which has proposed a five-year satellite spectrum allotment, extendable by two years if necessary.
Industry analysts note that Starlink’s entry will enhance broadband connectivity, particularly in remote and underserved regions of the country. The company is expected to join other satellite internet providers in India, including OneWeb and Jio-SES, in strengthening the nation’s digital infrastructure.
With the Unified License secured, Starlink is poised to play a significant role in bridging India’s digital divide, offering high-speed satellite internet to areas where conventional connectivity remains limited.
