Google Reinstates In-Person Interviews Amid AI Cheating Concerns

Google resumes in-person interviews

August 26, 2025 — Google has announced the return of at least one round of in-person interviews for engineering and programming roles, citing widespread AI-assisted cheating in virtual assessments. The decision, confirmed by CEO Sundar Pichai, aims to ensure candidates demonstrate genuine technical skills and strong computer science fundamentals.

Speaking recently, Mr. Pichai said, “We are making sure we’ll introduce at least one round of in-person interviews for people, just to make sure the fundamentals are there.” He emphasized that the move reflects Google’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of its recruitment process, particularly as AI tools become increasingly accessible to job applicants.

Industry sources report that the use of unauthorized AI in virtual coding assessments has surged in recent months. Analysts estimate that over half of candidates in some technical interviews have relied on AI assistance, making it challenging for employers to accurately evaluate true competencies.

Google’s decision mirrors a broader industry trend. Leading companies such as Amazon, Cisco, McKinsey, and Deloitte have reinstated in-person interview rounds to counteract AI-related cheating and ensure the authenticity of candidate evaluations.

While remote recruitment has provided convenience and efficiency, it has also introduced new challenges in verifying candidates’ abilities. Experts say that direct human interaction during interviews remains crucial for assessing problem-solving skills, coding proficiency, and critical thinking.

With this strategic shift, Google underscores the growing recognition that AI, while a valuable tool, cannot fully replace the evaluation of human expertise. The reintroduction of in-person interviews is expected to strengthen the company’s recruitment process and maintain high standards for future hires.
