Bombay High Court Stays 10-Day Liquor Ban in Pune During Ganeshotsav 2025

Pune Ganeshotsav liquor ban

August 28, 2025: The Bombay High Court has stayed the 10-day blanket ban on liquor sales in central Pune, which was scheduled during the Ganeshotsav celebrations. The move comes following a petition filed by the Pune Bar and Restaurant Association challenging the district administration’s order.

Earlier this month, the Pune district administration had announced a total prohibition on the sale of alcohol in areas under Vishrambaug, Faraskhana, and Khadak police jurisdictions from September 7 to September 17. The ban, aimed at maintaining public order during the festival, applied to liquor shops, bars, restaurants, and permit rooms.

However, the Pune Bar and Restaurant Association argued that the ban was overly broad and adversely affected the hospitality sector. Following their appeal, the Bombay High Court issued an interim order staying the blanket prohibition, directing authorities to reconsider and implement a more balanced approach.

In response, the district administration issued a revised order imposing limited dry-day restrictions. The new guidelines focus on specific areas and dates, ensuring public safety while minimizing disruption to local businesses. The administration emphasized that enforcement teams would monitor adherence to the revised rules during the festival.

Ganeshotsav is a major cultural and religious festival in Pune, attracting thousands of devotees and tourists. Authorities have urged residents and visitors to comply with the dry-day restrictions to ensure a smooth and peaceful celebration.

The court’s intervention underscores the importance of balancing public safety with economic considerations, offering a more nuanced solution for large-scale public events in the city.
