August 30, 2025 – Mumbai is set to launch a new electric water taxi service on September 22, 2025, aimed at improving connectivity between the Gateway of India/Mumbai Ferry Wharf and the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA). This initiative represents a major step towards sustainable urban transport in the city.
The upcoming service will deploy state-of-the-art electric vessels designed to offer commuters a faster, cleaner, and more efficient alternative to traditional road transport. Officials estimate that the new water taxis will reduce travel time between the Gateway of India and JNPA to under 40 minutes, providing a convenient option for daily commuters and tourists alike.
“This project is part of Mumbai’s broader vision to promote green and sustainable transportation,” said a spokesperson from the Mumbai Maritime Board. “By leveraging electric-powered vessels, we aim to reduce carbon emissions, ease traffic congestion, and offer a reliable mode of transport along the city’s waterfront.”
While this launch is being widely celebrated as a step forward for eco-friendly urban mobility, it is not the first water taxi initiative in India. Mumbai inaugurated the country’s first water taxi service in February 2022, which has since been operating on selected routes, connecting major city points along the waterfront.
