September 1, 2025: Gujarat is set to become the first state in India to roll out a barrier-free toll plaza as part of the Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) system. The pilot project will be launched at the Choryasi Fee Plaza on National Highway 48 (NH-48), representing a significant step in modernizing toll collection across the country.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) confirmed the initiative following a partnership agreement with the Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL) and ICICI Bank. The collaboration is aimed at streamlining toll operations, reducing traffic congestion, and improving convenience for commuters.
The MLFF system replaces conventional toll booths with an automated, barrier-free setup. Vehicles can pass through without stopping, as sensors and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology detect vehicles and process toll payments electronically. The system is expected to save travel time, cut fuel consumption, and lower emissions at toll points.
The Choryasi Fee Plaza, located on the Bharuch-Surat stretch of NH-48, has been chosen for the pilot phase. Officials believe the project’s success here will encourage wider adoption across national highways, positioning India as a leader in modern tolling solutions.
Under this initiative, ICICI Bank will manage digital payment transactions to ensure smooth processing for FASTag and other users. IHMCL will oversee the technical implementation and monitoring of the system. NHAI emphasized that the move aligns with India’s vision for smart highways and digital infrastructure development.
Experts note that barrier-free toll plazas not only improve traffic flow but also enhance safety by reducing sudden braking and congestion-related accidents. The fully automated system also promotes transparency and accountability in toll operations.
With the Choryasi plaza set to go live, Gujarat is paving the way for a new era of tolling in India. A successful pilot could lead to the nationwide rollout of the MLFF system, offering a faster, safer, and more efficient travel experience for motorists.
