Ahmedabad, June 12 — A major incident occurred at Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on Wednesday morning when an Air India flight carrying 242 passengers and crew members veered off the runway during take-off. Authorities confirmed that all individuals on board were safely evacuated.
The aircraft, operating as flight AI-481 and headed to Delhi, lost control while accelerating for departure around 9:12 AM. Airport sources indicated a suspected engine malfunction shortly before lift-off, which caused the aircraft to skid off the tarmac. Flames and thick smoke were seen billowing from the left wing of the plane following the incident.
Emergency response teams were immediately activated. Over a dozen fire tenders and multiple ambulances reached the spot within minutes. Firefighters successfully extinguished the blaze within 20 minutes and assisted in the safe evacuation of all passengers through emergency exits.
Seventeen passengers suffered minor injuries, mostly due to panic or while exiting the aircraft. They were taken to Civil Hospital in Ahmedabad for treatment and are reported to be in stable condition.
As a precaution, operations at the airport were temporarily suspended. Several flights were delayed or rerouted. Passengers have been advised to check flight updates before arriving at the terminal.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has initiated an investigation into the incident. Officials from the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) have been dispatched to examine the site and collect evidence related to the technical failure.
In an official statement, Air India acknowledged the event and assured that all affected passengers are receiving necessary support. The airline added that it is fully cooperating with aviation regulators during the inquiry.
Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia responded to the incident, stating, “Safety of passengers is our top priority. A detailed inquiry has been ordered, and corrective actions will follow based on findings.”
The aircraft involved will remain grounded until a thorough inspection is completed. Aviation authorities have also indicated that additional checks will be conducted on similar aircraft models as a precautionary measure.
The quick action by airport staff and emergency teams prevented a potential disaster and ensured the safety of everyone on board. Authorities are expected to release preliminary findings of the investigation in the coming days.
