A commendable display of honesty and swift coordination by a Bengaluru Metro home guard helped a commuter recover her lost valuables — including gold jewellery and a considerable sum of money — within a remarkably short span of 30 minutes on Thursday.
The incident occurred at the MG Road Metro Station during peak morning hours, when a female passenger, identified as 35-year-old Radhika Sharma, inadvertently left her handbag behind in a coach of the Purple Line train. The bag contained approximately 150 grams of gold ornaments, ₹30,000 in cash, as well as important personal belongings.
Upon realizing the loss, Sharma immediately alerted the station’s security personnel. Responding without delay, Home Guard Ramesh Gowda, stationed at MG Road, initiated communication with the Metro control room and security staff across stations along the train’s route. Leveraging the Bangalore Metro’s integrated surveillance system, they began tracking the bag using footage from onboard and platform CCTV cameras.
Within minutes, the unattended bag was spotted in one of the coaches. The control team coordinated with staff at Trinity Metro Station — the train’s next stop — where the train was halted briefly to retrieve the bag. After verifying the contents and confirming ownership through identification documents, the belongings were safely returned to the passenger.
Speaking to the media, a visibly relieved Radhika Sharma praised the Metro staff, stating, “I was in complete panic. Losing such valuables in a crowded metro system felt like a nightmare. I’m beyond grateful to the Metro security team and especially Home Guard Ramesh Gowda for their sincerity and professionalism.”
Officials from the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) also issued a statement, commending the swift response. “This event reflects our team’s dedication to passenger service and security. We urge all commuters to report lost articles at the earliest to enable faster recovery,” said a senior BMRCL official.
Ramesh Gowda, who has served with Metro security for over five years, said he was simply fulfilling his duty. “We are trained to act quickly in such cases. It’s our responsibility to ensure the safety of every commuter using the Bengaluru Metro,” he remarked.
The incident quickly gained traction online, with numerous citizens praising the Metro’s efficient response and the home guard’s integrity. Hashtags such as #BengaluruMetro, #MetroHero, and #LostAndFoundSuccess trended locally on social media platforms.
As Bengaluru continues to expand its metro network and ridership grows, this episode serves as a testament to the importance of a reliable security system and dedicated personnel. The BMRCL remains committed to ensuring a safe and secure environment for all metro passengers through regular training and upgraded surveillance technology.
