New Delhi: In a landmark move aimed at bolstering India’s defence manufacturing capabilities, the fuselages of the Rafale fighter aircraft will now be produced domestically. This decision is expected to significantly advance the government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative and strengthen self-reliance in the country’s aerospace sector.
The Rafale, a state-of-the-art multirole combat aircraft procured from France’s Dassault Aviation, has been a cornerstone in modernizing the Indian Air Force (IAF). Until now, most Rafale aircraft components, including fuselages, were imported or assembled abroad. The transition to manufacturing fuselages within India represents a crucial step towards indigenization.
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), India’s premier aerospace public sector undertaking, will oversee the production of the fuselage, which forms the main structural body of the aircraft. This component houses critical systems such as the cockpit, avionics, and fuel tanks, demanding sophisticated manufacturing technologies and quality control.
Officials have highlighted that domestic production will reduce dependency on foreign suppliers, streamline maintenance and repair processes, and create employment opportunities across the defence industrial ecosystem. HAL’s expanded capabilities are also expected to benefit ancillary industries and improve overall supply chain resilience.
This initiative aligns with India’s broader defence sector goals under the ‘Make in India’ campaign, which seeks to develop advanced indigenous capabilities and transform India into a global manufacturing hub.
