June 27 – In a push toward eco-friendly urban transport, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Wednesday flagged off a fresh fleet of electric buses under the Delhi Electric Vehicle Initiative (DEVI) and inaugurated a newly developed bus depot in Narela, which was completed in just 90 days.

The Chief Minister described the rapid completion of the Narela depot as a reflection of the BJP-led administration’s focus on timely and efficient delivery of public infrastructure. “Finishing such a crucial project in just three months showcases our government’s commitment to efficient governance and sustainable development,” said Gupta during the launch.

The newly constructed depot in Narela is designed with modern infrastructure including electric charging points, automated cleaning systems, and maintenance bays. It will function as a hub for housing and servicing more than 100 electric buses that will serve various routes across Delhi.

The electric buses launched under the DEVI scheme are equipped with contemporary features such as real-time tracking via GPS, security surveillance through CCTV cameras, and wheelchair access. Officials stated that these zero-emission buses are aimed at reducing both noise and air pollution in the capital, while improving passenger comfort and safety.

Delhi’s Electric Vehicle Policy, which aims to make one in every four new vehicle registrations electric by 2025, continues to gain momentum through such initiatives. According to government estimates, vehicular emissions constitute a major share of the city’s air pollution. The introduction of electric buses is expected to significantly mitigate this problem and move the capital toward a more sustainable public transport system.

Rekha Gupta, addressing a gathering of officials and local residents, emphasized the government’s goal to replace outdated infrastructure with environmentally conscious alternatives. “This is more than a transport initiative—it is part of our larger vision for a cleaner, healthier Delhi,” she said.

The event saw participation from senior officials of the transport department, engineers involved in the depot’s construction, and members of the local community. The Chief Minister also assured that similar projects will be undertaken in other parts of the city to further strengthen Delhi’s EV network.

With the introduction of the DEVI electric buses and the operational launch of the Narela depot, Delhi moves a step closer to its clean mobility goals. The state government plans to continue expanding its electric fleet and supporting infrastructure in the coming months.
