Elephant Disturbed by Loud Music Causes Brief Chaos at Ahmedabad’s 148th Rath Yatra; Two Injured

Elephant disrupts Rath Yatra

June 27 — A minor incident occurred during the 148th Rath Yatra in Ahmedabad on Friday morning when an elephant, reportedly startled by loud music, strayed from the procession route, resulting in minor injuries to two individuals.

The Rath Yatra began from the historic Jagannath Temple in Jamalpur with the traditional grandeur and participation of thousands of devotees. As the chariot procession moved forward, accompanied by drums, bands, and decorated animals, an elephant reportedly became uneasy due to the sudden volume of the music.

Witnesses at the scene said the animal briefly lost control, creating a moment of panic among the crowd. In the rush to move out of the way, two people fell and sustained minor injuries. They were immediately taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and are reported to be stable.

Security personnel and event organizers acted promptly to calm the elephant and ensure it was moved to a secure location. The situation was brought under control quickly, and the Rath Yatra resumed without further disturbance.

This year’s procession saw extensive security arrangements, including the deployment of over 26,000 police personnel, drone surveillance, and facial recognition systems to manage the large number of participants and ensure public safety.

The incident has sparked discussion around the continued use of live animals in religious processions. Animal welfare groups have raised concerns regarding the stress such events can place on animals, especially in noisy and crowded environments.

Speaking on the matter, a senior official from the temple committee said, “We regret the unexpected situation and are reviewing the incident seriously. While elephants have long been part of our cultural tradition, the safety of all — including animals — remains a priority.”

Despite the brief disruption, the Rath Yatra continued peacefully with strong community participation and religious enthusiasm. The annual event, marking the symbolic journey of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra, remains one of Gujarat’s most significant spiritual gatherings.

Authorities have assured that they will re-evaluate safety protocols and animal management practices to prevent similar incidents in future celebrations.
