Google has announced the global expansion of its AI Overviews feature, making it available in over 200 countries and territories and supporting more than 40 languages. The rollout, revealed during the company’s annual I/O developer conference, marks a major milestone in Google’s ongoing effort to embed generative AI into its core search engine.
AI Overviews, previously known as the Search Generative Experience (SGE), utilizes artificial intelligence to generate quick summaries of search queries by aggregating content from multiple online sources. The feature was initially introduced in the United States in 2023 and has since undergone extensive testing and development.
With the latest expansion, users worldwide will begin seeing AI-generated summaries at the top of their search results, providing concise answers to complex queries. The feature is now available in languages including Spanish, French, Hindi, Arabic, Japanese, and more, improving accessibility for millions of users in multilingual and mobile-first regions.
According to Google CEO Sundar Pichai, the aim of AI Overviews is to offer more helpful, context-aware responses directly in the search interface. “We’re reimagining what search can be,” said Pichai. “With AI Overviews, we’re able to better understand questions and deliver high-quality information in a natural, conversational way.”
The global rollout comes as part of Google’s broader push to remain competitive in the fast-growing generative AI market. The company faces increasing pressure from rivals like Microsoft and OpenAI, both of which are investing heavily in similar AI-driven search technologies.
Technology analysts say the move could transform how billions of people interact with the internet. “This is one of the most significant changes to Google Search in its 25-year history,” said Angela Lin, a tech industry analyst at DataBridge Research. “It streamlines the user experience and positions Google to retain its dominance as AI becomes central to digital navigation.”
Despite the innovation, concerns remain over the reliability and neutrality of AI-generated content. Critics have cautioned about the potential for misinformation, hallucinations, and reduced visibility for smaller publishers. In response, Google stated that AI Overviews have been developed with multiple layers of quality assurance and will continue to evolve with user feedback.
The company also confirmed that the feature has been designed to comply with local regulations, including the European Union’s Digital Markets Act, and will operate in line with each region’s data protection and competition laws.
Early user feedback from markets including Brazil, India, and South Korea has been largely positive, with many praising the feature’s ability to save time and deliver clearer search results. Google says it will continue to refine AI Overviews to improve accuracy, transparency, and user control.
With this global rollout, Google is not only redefining the future of search but also intensifying the race to lead in consumer-facing AI technologies.
