At the Google I/O 2025 developer conference, Google introduced Beam, an advanced AI-driven 3D video communication platform poised to redefine remote collaboration. Evolving from the experimental Project Starline, Beam leverages artificial intelligence and cutting-edge imaging technologies to create lifelike, three-dimensional video calls without the need for specialized headsets or glasses.
Beam employs an array of six cameras and a light field display to capture and render participants in real-time 3D, enabling natural eye contact and the perception of depth and dimensionality. The system’s AI volumetric video model processes standard 2D video streams, transforming them into realistic 3D representations from any perspective. This innovation aims to bridge the gap between virtual and in-person interactions, enhancing communication by allowing users to read subtle cues and build trust more effectively.
A notable feature of Beam is its integration of real-time speech translation, facilitating seamless multilingual conversations. This capability maintains the speaker’s voice, tone, and expressions, making cross-language communication more natural and intuitive.
In collaboration with HP, Google plans to bring Beam to enterprises later this year. Early adopters include prominent organizations such as Deloitte, Salesforce, Citadel, NEC, Duolingo, and Hackensack Meridian Health. The Beam system has been miniaturized from its original room-sized prototype to a compact setup comprising a display and a compute puck, designed to integrate with existing workflows and priced competitively with current videoconferencing solutions.
Studies indicate that users of Beam experience reduced fatigue and increased engagement compared to traditional 2D meetings. The platform currently supports one-on-one calls, with features like screen mirroring and live translation, while group functionality is under development.
Google envisions Beam extending beyond enterprise use, aiming to make it accessible for home environments in the future. By offering a more immersive and lifelike communication experience, Beam positions itself as a compelling alternative to existing platforms like Zoom and Google Meet.
