New Delhi, June 27, 2025: The Ministry of Home Affairs has officially announced that the cyber fraud awareness caller tune voiced by Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan will be removed starting today. This decision marks the end of a significant public safety initiative that has been in effect for several years.
Originally introduced to alert mobile users about the dangers of cybercrime, the caller tune featured Bachchan’s voice cautioning against clicking unknown links, sharing OTPs, and responding to suspicious calls. It was widely heard across all telecom networks, becoming a familiar part of everyday communication in India.
According to government officials, the removal comes as part of a strategy to modernize digital safety campaigns. “The message has had a strong impact over time, but evolving cyber threats now require updated and more engaging methods of communication,” a senior official from the Cyber Security Division stated.
The cyber fraud caller tune, which played automatically when calls were made, was particularly emphasized during the COVID-19 pandemic when digital transactions increased substantially. Authorities credit the tune with raising awareness among the masses about common online scams and fraud tactics.
Telecom service providers have been directed to take down the audio alert starting June 27, with a complete rollout expected within 48 hours. The government has not yet revealed the replacement content but indicated it may include newer forms of outreach such as animated advisories, social media campaigns, and content in regional languages.
Cybersecurity experts believe the campaign was effective but agree that updates are needed. “Amitabh Bachchan’s voice created trust and familiarity. It was a great move to educate users, but with cybercrime getting more complex, the tools we use to fight it must also evolve,” said Pavan Duggal, a leading cyber law advocate.
Citizens are advised to remain alert and cautious while conducting any digital financial transactions and to follow updates from official government channels.
The government’s initiative to end the current caller tune represents a shift towards adopting more interactive and up-to-date public awareness tools to combat the growing threat of cyber fraud across India.
