India Emerges as Top Contender to Host 2030 Commonwealth Games, Ahmedabad Leads Bid

India 2030 Commonwealth Games

New Delhi, June 27 — India has officially positioned itself as a leading contender to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, with Ahmedabad spearheading the country’s bid. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA), in collaboration with the Gujarat government, has submitted a formal expression of interest to the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF), highlighting the city’s advanced infrastructure and logistical preparedness.

The announcement comes amid growing uncertainty over the 2030 Games, as several countries have withdrawn their bids citing financial constraints. India’s proposal offers the CGF a viable and stable alternative, backed by government support and an ambitious development vision.

Ahmedabad, known for housing the world’s largest cricket stadium — the Narendra Modi Stadium — is central to the bid. The city is also home to the upcoming Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave, a sprawling 215-acre multi-sport complex set to be completed well ahead of 2030. Officials have emphasized that the city’s modern transportation systems, including a growing metro network and the under-construction Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train, further enhance its readiness to host an event of this scale.

“We are committed to bringing the Commonwealth Games back to India,” an IOA official said. “Ahmedabad’s comprehensive infrastructure and the support from both central and state governments make it the perfect host city.”

India previously hosted the Commonwealth Games in 2010, in New Delhi. While the event drew global attention, it also faced criticism over delays and organizational issues. Authorities this time are keen to project a vastly improved and transparent approach, leveraging both past experience and new-age urban development.

The Gujarat government has already begun preparations to ensure the city meets international standards across venues, accommodations, security, and sustainability. According to sources, the state plans to invest heavily in green infrastructure and digital technologies to align the event with global environmental goals.

Sports analysts see India’s bid as a strategic move to assert itself on the global sports map, especially with the country recently submitting its intent to host the 2036 Olympic Games. Hosting the Commonwealth Games in 2030 would not only serve as a rehearsal for the Olympics but also boost India’s global standing in sports diplomacy.

The final decision on the 2030 host is expected to be made by the CGF in early 2026. If selected, India would become the fourth Asian nation to host the Commonwealth Games, reaffirming its growing influence in international sporting events.
