The Indian Ministry of Defence has signed a ₹659.47 crore contract with a consortium of MKU Ltd and Medbit Technologies for the procurement of advanced Night Sights and associated accessories for the Indian Army’s 7.62x51mm SIG 716 assault rifles. This acquisition is aimed at strengthening operational capabilities during night-time and low-visibility operations.
The advanced Night Sights will allow soldiers to engage targets with precision up to 500 meters, significantly improving upon the limitations of existing Passive Night Sights. With these upgrades, the SIG 716 rifles are expected to perform at their full effective range, enhancing combat readiness during nocturnal missions.
The procurement has been made under the ‘Buy (Indian-IDDM)’ category, ensuring that over 51% of the components are of indigenous origin. This move highlights India’s commitment to self-reliance in defense manufacturing while also supporting Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) involved in the supply chain of components and raw materials.
The contract has been awarded to a consortium comprising MKU Ltd, a Kanpur-based defense manufacturer specializing in optronics and protective gear, and Medbit Technologies Pvt Ltd, which brings expertise in advanced imaging technology. The collaboration underscores the growing capabilities of India’s domestic defense sector in meeting the evolving needs of the armed forces.
By equipping SIG 716 rifles with advanced night vision technology, the Indian Army is expected to enhance its operational efficiency in diverse terrains, including high-altitude and border areas. Improved target acquisition and situational awareness during night operations will enable soldiers to respond more effectively to security challenges.
The ₹659.47 crore deal marks a significant step in modernizing the Indian Army’s infantry equipment.
