Indian-Origin Zohran Mamdani Wins Democratic Primary for New York Mayor Race

June 25 — Indian-origin politician Zohran Mamdani has secured a decisive victory in the Democratic primary for the New York City mayoral election, defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo in a closely contested race held on Tuesday.

Mamdani, a 33-year-old assemblyman from Queens and a prominent figure within the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), is now set to become the party’s official candidate for the upcoming New York mayoral election in November 2025.

Mamdani’s campaign was marked by a strong emphasis on housing reform, public transportation improvements, and working-class advocacy. His win is being viewed as a major success for progressive movements in the city, signaling a broader shift within Democratic politics in New York.

“This victory is not mine alone — it belongs to every tenant fighting eviction, every commuter demanding better transit, and every New Yorker dreaming of a city that serves them,” Mamdani said while addressing supporters in Jackson Heights shortly after the results were announced.

The young politician, who is the son of Indian filmmaker Mira Nair and Ugandan scholar Mahmood Mamdani, entered public office in 2020 and has since gained prominence for his grassroots approach to policymaking and constituent engagement.

Former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who attempted a political comeback with this mayoral bid, conceded the race on election night.

“Tonight was not our night,” Cuomo told supporters at his campaign headquarters. “I called him, I congratulated him… he won.”

Cuomo, once a dominant figure in New York politics, struggled to overcome lingering criticism from his 2021 resignation and failed to connect with a younger, more progressive voter base.

If elected in November, Mamdani would become the first Indian-origin and Muslim mayor of New York City, a development that has drawn widespread attention both in the United States and internationally.

His victory has been hailed by leaders and citizens across the Indian diaspora, with many describing it as a “historic moment” for representation and inclusive governance.

Political analysts say Mamdani’s success reflects growing momentum for left-leaning candidates in urban areas, particularly among younger voters and marginalized communities.

With Democrats traditionally dominant in New York City, Mamdani is now seen as the frontrunner in the upcoming general election. However, his campaign team has stated that they remain focused on expanding voter outreach and building coalitions across all boroughs.

As the mayoral race moves into its final phase, all eyes will be on Mamdani as he aims to translate his primary success into a citywide mandate.
