Indore, June 12 — Indore’s Kamla Nehru Zoological Park is set to become home to the country’s largest tunnel aquarium, a first-of-its-kind facility that will blend modern green architecture with immersive marine experiences.

According to officials from the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC), the tunnel aquarium will feature a 30-meter-long transparent walkway, allowing visitors a 360-degree view of aquatic life. The structure will replicate ocean ecosystems, housing diverse marine species including sharks, stingrays, exotic fish, and coral reefs.

The project is estimated to cost ₹25 crore and will be developed under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. Construction is expected to begin later this year, with the facility targeted for completion by early 2027.

“The aquarium will not only enhance Indore’s tourism appeal but also act as an educational hub for marine biodiversity and conservation,” said an IMC official. “This initiative supports our broader goals of sustainable development and smart city planning.”

The facility will include solar energy systems, advanced water filtration, and rainwater harvesting to ensure energy efficiency and minimal environmental impact. Temperature-controlled habitats will be developed to simulate natural marine conditions, ensuring the welfare of aquatic species.

This development adds to Indore Zoo’s growing list of innovative initiatives. Previously recognized for its digitized animal adoption program and successful breeding efforts, the zoo is now positioning itself as a leader in eco-tourism and conservation education.

Residents and wildlife enthusiasts have welcomed the announcement, calling it a major milestone for the city. Once completed, the aquarium is expected to attract thousands of visitors each month and strengthen Indore’s status as not only India’s cleanest city but also a centre for smart, sustainable infrastructure.

The IMC has confirmed that marine biologists, environmental engineers, and design experts are being consulted to ensure the project meets international standards.

The tunnel aquarium project is part of a broader effort to enhance Indore’s ecological infrastructure while promoting environmental awareness among the public.
