June 27, 2025 — In a first-of-its-kind initiative, ISKCON Kolkata has fitted fighter jet tyres to Lord Jagannath’s chariot to ensure smooth and safe movement during the upcoming Rath Yatra on July 7. The innovative move has garnered nationwide attention for combining advanced technology with ancient tradition.

The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) officials confirmed that tyres used in Indian Air Force fighter aircraft have been adapted for the three massive wooden chariots of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Goddess Subhadra. The step aims to enhance safety, durability, and maneuverability during the grand procession, which witnesses participation from thousands of devotees.

Radharaman Das, Vice President of ISKCON Kolkata, stated, “The fighter jet tyres are designed to carry extremely heavy loads at high speed. Their superior strength and shock absorption capability make them ideal for the chariots, which carry immense weight and move through city roads packed with people.”

The chariot wheels, traditionally made of wood, often face structural stress during the long journey. Last year, a minor mishap during the yatra raised concerns about the safety of devotees and the stability of the raths. In response, ISKCON sought expert advice and collaborated with aviation engineers to repurpose the aircraft tyres.

Officials clarified that the modification maintains the spiritual sanctity and aesthetic appearance of the chariots. The wooden frames remain intact, with the tyres fitted discreetly beneath, ensuring that the religious sentiment associated with the rath construction is preserved.

The initiative has been appreciated by city authorities and law enforcement agencies, who expect better control and fewer logistical issues during the event. Kolkata Police has already begun route mapping and crowd management drills in anticipation of the massive turnout.

The Rath Yatra in Kolkata, modeled after the world-famous Jagannath Puri Yatra, draws devotees from across the region. This year, ISKCON has also planned live telecasts, eco-friendly prasadam distribution, and medical booths to ensure a seamless and inclusive experience.

With the integration of aviation technology into this ancient religious event, ISKCON Kolkata has set a new example of innovation in tradition. Devotees and city residents alike await this year’s chariot procession with heightened enthusiasm and reassurance of improved safety measures.
