June 25 — Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has sought a special grant of ₹1.15 lakh crore from the central government to revamp Bengaluru’s deteriorating infrastructure and support the city’s rapid urban growth. The proposal was submitted during his recent visit to New Delhi, where he urged Union leaders to consider the city’s critical needs and its contribution to the national economy.

The Chief Minister highlighted that the financial assistance would be utilized to address key urban challenges such as traffic congestion, poor drainage systems, water supply issues, solid waste management, and inadequate public transport. The grant, if approved, would support major projects including the expansion of the Bengaluru Metro, development of a 317-km suburban rail network, construction of peripheral ring roads, and stormwater drain upgrades aimed at preventing urban flooding.

“Bengaluru is not just the capital of Karnataka, but also India’s IT and innovation hub. Without a strong infrastructure backbone, the city’s future growth and contribution to the national economy will be hampered,” Siddaramaiah said.

The proposal underscores Bengaluru’s economic importance, accounting for nearly 38% of Karnataka’s GDP and a significant share of the nation’s tax revenues. Despite its economic role, the Chief Minister argued that the city has been receiving inadequate central support for infrastructure development over the years.

Officials from the Karnataka Urban Development Department stated that the comprehensive plan also includes strengthening of road networks, integrated traffic management systems, and modernization of civic utilities. The state has emphasized that Bengaluru’s population of over 13 million requires urgent investment to meet both present and future demands.

Urban experts and planners have long warned that without immediate and large-scale interventions, Bengaluru’s infrastructure will be unable to cope with the pressures of expansion. Frequent traffic snarls, water shortages, waste disposal issues, and inadequate public transport have continued to plague the city, affecting the quality of life and business productivity.

The grant request, routed through the Bengaluru Metropolitan Region Development Authority (BMRDA) and Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), aims to fast-track several delayed and pending infrastructure projects.

The Centre is yet to formally respond to the proposal. However, officials within the Karnataka government are hopeful that the request will be taken up seriously in light of Bengaluru’s significance to the country’s economy and global image as a technology powerhouse.

If approved, the ₹1.15 lakh crore grant would mark one of the largest ever infrastructure investments in a single Indian city, potentially transforming Bengaluru into a model metropolis for sustainable urban development.
