South Korean carmaker Kia Motors has broadened its footprint in India’s automotive market by introducing its latest compact SUV, the Kia Carens Clavis. Priced at ₹11.50 lakh (ex-showroom), the new model was unveiled at a press event held in Mumbai on Thursday. Designed to cater to young urban families and SUV enthusiasts, the Carens Clavis promises a blend of style, performance, and functionality within a sub-compact package.
Slotted between the Kia Sonet and Seltos in the lineup, the Clavis marks a fresh chapter for Kia India. It boasts a strong and bold exterior along with first-in-segment features and modern technology enhancements. Customers can choose between manual and automatic transmission options, with an electric variant anticipated to launch later in the year.
Engine and Exterior Design
Powering the Carens Clavis is a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine that produces 120 PS and 172 Nm of torque. Buyers can opt for a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. In keeping with Kia’s global push towards electric mobility, the company plans to introduce a fully electric version by the end of 2025.
The SUV’s design incorporates Kia’s signature “Tiger Nose” grille, a raised bonnet, squared-off wheel arches, and dual-tone alloy wheels. The vehicle’s boxy and upright stance reflects classic SUV aesthetics, enhanced by modern features such as LED headlamps and roof rails.
Interior and Technology
Inside, the Carens Clavis is equipped with a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a fully digital instrument cluster, and connected car technology. Additional highlights include multi-zone ambient lighting, a wireless charging pad, rear air conditioning vents, and a premium sound system in the higher trims.
Safety is a priority, with the model featuring six airbags, anti-lock braking system (ABS) with electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD), electronic stability control (ESC), a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), and a 360-degree camera setup. These safety measures are likely to appeal to families and first-time SUV owners.
Competitive Landscape and Future Outlook
With competitive pricing and a comprehensive feature set, the Carens Clavis aims to take on rivals like the Hyundai Venue, Tata Nexon, Maruti Suzuki Brezza, and Mahindra XUV300. Kia plans to leverage its growing brand recognition and extensive dealer network to boost the model’s success in the Indian market.
At the launch, Kia India’s Managing Director and CEO, Tae-Jin Park, remarked, “The Carens Clavis exemplifies our dedication to combining innovation with practical everyday use. We are confident it will strongly connect with India’s youth and urban families.”
Production and Availability
Manufacturing of the Carens Clavis will be carried out at Kia’s plant in Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh, with deliveries expected to start from early June. Bookings are now open at Kia dealerships and through online platforms.
Boasting rugged styling, a feature-packed cabin, and plans for an electric version, the Kia Carens Clavis is well-positioned to make a notable impact in India’s competitive compact SUV segment.
