April 7, 2025 | Mumbai – In a significant move to enhance women’s safety and strengthen cybercrime prevention, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis today inaugurated the Nirbhaya Cyber Lab and women’s help desks across multiple police stations in the state.
The inauguration ceremony was held in Mumbai, with senior police officials, members of women’s rights organizations, and key government representatives in attendance. The initiative is part of the state’s broader mission to create a safer environment for women and children, especially in the digital age.
Speaking at the event, CM Fadnavis stated, “The safety of women is not just a law enforcement responsibility but a collective mission for society. The launch of the Nirbhaya Cyber Lab and women’s help desks is a major step in using technology to protect and empower women.”
High-Tech Infrastructure to Tackle Cybercrime
The Nirbhaya Cyber Lab is equipped with advanced digital forensic tools and software to monitor, investigate, and act on cyber threats targeting women. The lab will assist in faster detection of online abuse, cyberstalking, financial frauds, and exploitation through social media platforms.
Officials revealed that trained personnel will operate the lab, ensuring sensitive and speedy handling of cases related to online harassment and crimes against women.
Women’s Help Desks: Support at the Grassroots
Alongside the cyber lab, dedicated women’s help desks have been established at over 500 police stations statewide. These desks will serve as the first point of contact for women in distress and will be staffed by specially trained female officers. The help desks are expected to handle complaints with greater empathy and efficiency, reducing the hesitation many women feel when approaching police stations.
Empowering Through Awareness
The government also announced plans to conduct regular awareness drives in schools, colleges, and public spaces to educate women about cyber safety, legal rights, and how to report incidents.
A Step Toward Safer Maharashtra
This initiative is being hailed as a proactive move toward creating a safe and supportive ecosystem for women in both the physical and digital realms. With the rising number of cybercrime cases, especially targeting women, the Nirbhaya Cyber Lab is seen as a much-needed infrastructure upgrade for law enforcement.
The Maharashtra government has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring justice, dignity, and protection for every woman in the state.
