Maharashtra Honors Sambhaji Maharaj on Jayanti: Remembering the Warrior King’s Legacy

Sambhaji Maharaj

Mumbai, May 14, 2025 — Across Maharashtra and parts of India, tributes poured in today to honor the birth anniversary of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the valiant Maratha king known for his fearless resistance against the Mughal empire and his steadfast commitment to Swarajya (self-rule). Political leaders, historians, and cultural organizations marked the day with commemorative events, speeches, and educational programs highlighting his contributions to Indian history.

Born on May 14, 1657, Sambhaji Maharaj was the eldest son of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the founder of the Maratha Empire. After Shivaji’s demise, Sambhaji ascended the throne in 1681 and ruled for nine years, during which he led several key battles against the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. He is widely revered for refusing to convert to Islam despite brutal torture, ultimately sacrificing his life for his faith and kingdom.

Political Leaders Pay Homage

On the occasion of Sambhaji Maharaj Jayanti, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde paid tribute at Raigad Fort, saying, “Sambhaji Maharaj’s courage and sacrifice are etched in the soul of Maharashtra. His life is a symbol of resilience and undying patriotism. The youth of our nation must draw inspiration from his story.”

Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis tweeted, “Salutations to the great warrior king Sambhaji Maharaj on his birth anniversary. His valor in the face of tyranny will always inspire generations.”

In Pune, cultural processions, bike rallies, and traditional powada performances — Marathi ballads that sing of Maratha bravery — took place, drawing large crowds.

Tech and Cultural Initiatives

In a digital tribute, the Maharashtra State Archives Department launched an interactive online exhibit featuring rare manuscripts, paintings, and battle strategies from Sambhaji Maharaj’s era. The exhibit aims to introduce younger generations to the rich history of the Maratha empire through immersive storytelling and visuals.

EdTech platform Bharat Itihas Academy also released a 3-part video series on Sambhaji Maharaj, blending AI-generated visuals with historical narration. Within hours, the videos garnered over 100,000 views on YouTube and X (formerly Twitter), reflecting a growing public interest in digital history content.

Health and Wellness Campaigns in His Name

On a unique note, the Sambhaji Maharaj Foundation, a Pune-based non-profit, organized a free health screening camp in rural areas of the state, especially focused on tribal belts in the Sahyadri range. Over 3,000 people benefitted from eye checkups, dental camps, and nutrition consultations. The foundation’s trustee, Dr. Rajesh Jadhav, said, “We want to serve society in the spirit of Sambhaji Maharaj — with dignity, courage, and compassion.”

Entertainment Industry Joins In

Bollywood also paid homage, with actor Riteish Deshmukh announcing that production has begun on his long-anticipated biopic, Raja Dharamveer, based on Sambhaji Maharaj’s life. “This film is not just a tribute, but a responsibility to present an accurate and inspiring portrayal of a warrior who never bowed to tyranny,” said Deshmukh in an official statement.

Meanwhile, the Marathi film Shivputra Sambhaji, which premiered last year, is witnessing a surge in online streaming following the Jayanti celebrations, according to data from OTT platform Planet Marathi.

As Maharashtra reverberates with chants of “Jai Sambhaji Maharaj!”, the 368th birth anniversary serves as a timely reminder of a heroic figure who stood unwavering in the face of oppression. In today’s times, Sambhaji Maharaj remains not only a symbol of Maratha pride but also of national integrity, cultural strength, and fearless resistance.
