MG’s Tesla Model Y Rival to Debut in India on July 10 – But Sales Might Not Begin Immediately

MG Tesla Model Y rival

June 25, 2025 — MG Motor India is set to showcase its new electric SUV, seen as a potential rival to the Tesla Model Y, on July 10. Already available in international markets such as Australia and Thailand, the electric vehicle (EV) will make its first official appearance in India next month. However, sources indicate that the model might not be launched for commercial sale immediately after the unveiling.

The upcoming EV, likely to be a version of the MG4 Electric or a long-range variant of the ZS EV, is expected to target the premium electric SUV segment. While MG has not confirmed the model name, industry experts believe it will be positioned as a direct competitor to global EV leaders in performance, range, and technology.

Internationally, the vehicle offers a range of up to 530 km (WLTP cycle), supports rapid DC fast charging, and comes equipped with advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and connected car features. If similar specifications are introduced in India, it could set a new benchmark in the mid-to-premium EV category.

However, MG is likely to adopt a phased approach for the Indian market. The July 10 event is expected to serve as a product showcase rather than a commercial launch. According to company sources, the vehicle may initially be introduced under a pilot program to assess customer interest and adapt the product for Indian road and weather conditions.

The company’s cautious strategy reflects the current state of India’s EV infrastructure and consumer readiness. Despite growing demand for electric mobility, high initial costs, limited charging networks, and regulatory uncertainties remain key challenges.

MG has previously indicated plans to localize its EV offerings to make them more cost-effective. If the new electric SUV is eventually assembled locally, it could benefit from the government’s FAME-II subsidies, bringing down the price and making it more accessible to Indian buyers.

The unveiling comes at a time when major automakers like Hyundai, Tata Motors, and BYD are expanding their electric line-ups. Tesla, though frequently in talks about entering India, is yet to officially launch any of its models in the country. MG’s move could help it capture early-mover advantage in the premium EV space.

With rising fuel prices and increased environmental awareness, the demand for electric SUVs in India is on the rise. MG’s upcoming model could play a crucial role in shaping this segment, provided the brand follows up the showcase with a timely commercial rollout.
