More Rain Forecast for Pune; Shivajinagar Records 55 mm, Chinchwad Sees 47.5 mm

Shivajinagar rainfall update

Pune, June 14 The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh forecast indicating the likelihood of continued rainfall in Pune over the next few days. On Friday, multiple parts of the city witnessed moderate to heavy showers, with Shivajinagar registering 55 mm and Chinchwad recording 47.5 mm of rainfall within a 24-hour period.

The monsoon, which has now advanced across much of Maharashtra, is bringing relief to residents after a period of dry and humid weather. According to IMD officials, the current atmospheric conditions support sustained rainfall activity, with more showers expected over the weekend.

Showers to Continue in Pune Region

The IMD has predicted that Pune and its surrounding areas — including Pimpri-Chinchwad, Hadapsar, and Kothrud — will experience light to moderate rain, with the possibility of heavier spells in isolated locations. A low-pressure area developing over the Bay of Bengal is believed to be contributing to this active phase of the monsoon.

“Monsoon currents are strengthening, and rain-bearing clouds are likely to persist over the region. Citizens should remain alert, particularly during peak hours,” said an official from IMD Pune.

Urban Challenges and Traffic Impact

The rainfall caused minor disruptions across parts of the city. Areas such as Swargate, FC Road, and Baner witnessed slow-moving traffic and brief waterlogging due to blocked drainage lines. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has intensified its monitoring of waterlogged zones and deployed quick-response teams to address any potential flooding.

Officials stated that all known vulnerable points across Pune’s urban limits are being monitored closely. Pumping systems have been activated in key areas to mitigate any further water accumulation.

Water Storage and Agricultural Impact

The showers have brought some relief to the city’s water supply concerns. Reservoirs like Khadakwasla, Varasgaon, and Panshet have recorded slight increases in water levels, offering hope for better storage in the weeks ahead. Although current levels remain below seasonal norms, officials expect an improvement if rainfall continues at this pace.

In the rural belt of Pune district, the rainfall has arrived as a welcome development for farmers. Sowing activities, which had been delayed in parts of Daund, Shirur, and Baramati due to dry conditions, are now likely to resume.

Public Advisory Issued

The district administration has urged citizens to take necessary precautions during periods of intense rain. Commuters have been advised to avoid flooded roads and use real-time traffic updates. The public has also been requested to follow weather advisories and emergency updates from local authorities.

As the monsoon progresses, both the IMD and civic agencies remain on high alert to manage the evolving weather conditions and ensure minimal disruption to daily life.
