13 August,2025-Former Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has filed a ₹100 crore defamation suit against Zee Media Corporation, senior journalist Sudhir Chaudhary, retired IPS officer G. Sampath Kumar, and News Nation Network. The legal action accuses the defendants of falsely linking Dhoni to the 2013 Indian Premier League (IPL) betting and spot-fixing scandal.
According to court filings, Dhoni’s petition asserts that the accused parties made “baseless and malicious” statements in television broadcasts and reports, thereby tarnishing his reputation and misleading the public. The suit alleges that these reports wrongfully connected him to illegal betting activities, despite no investigative agency having named him in the scandal.
The controversy stems from the 2013 IPL spot-fixing case, which saw the arrest of several cricketers and team officials. Dhoni, who was captain of Chennai Super Kings at the time, has consistently denied any association with betting or match-fixing. His legal counsel stated that the false claims had “caused irreparable harm” to his personal and professional reputation.
In 2014, Dhoni had previously filed a civil suit against G. Sampath Kumar for similar allegations. This new action expands the scope to include major media outlets and prominent journalists, underscoring the seriousness of his legal stance against defamatory reporting.
Sources indicate that Dhoni’s legal team is seeking both financial damages and a permanent injunction to prevent the defendants from making further defamatory statements. The ₹100 crore compensation claim is intended to address reputational damage as well as the mental distress caused by the allegations.
Zee Media and News Nation Network have yet to issue official statements in response to the lawsuit. Sudhir Chaudhary, a high-profile television anchor, has also remained publicly silent on the matter. Meanwhile, legal experts suggest the case could reignite debates over journalistic accountability and the limits of media freedom in high-profile sports controversies.
Dhoni, regarded as one of India’s most successful cricket captains and a national icon, retired from international cricket in 2020 but remains active in the IPL as captain of Chennai Super Kings. His defamation suit signals a firm stand against what he describes as unfounded and damaging media narratives.
The case is scheduled for hearing in the coming weeks, with the outcome likely to set a precedent for defamation disputes involving sports personalities and the press. As legal proceedings unfold, the cricketing community and Dhoni’s vast fan base will be watching closely.
