In a devastating act of terror, 28 individuals, predominantly tourists, lost their lives, and over a dozen sustained injuries when armed militants opened fire in Baisaran meadow near Pahalgam, a renowned tourist destination in Jammu and Kashmir. The attack, executed around 2:30 PM, targeted visitors enjoying the scenic locale, leading to chaos and bloodshed.
Eyewitnesses recounted the horror as four assailants indiscriminately fired upon unsuspecting tourists engaged in leisure activities. Among the victims was Lt. Vinay Narwal, a 26-year-old Navy officer from Haryana, who was on his honeymoon. His wife’s condition remains critical. The massacre was claimed by The Resistance Front (TRF), an organization associated with the proscribed Lashkar-e-Taiba group.
A terrifying video emerged, unintentionally recorded by Rishi Bhatt, a tourist from Ahmedabad, while he was ziplining during the attack. The footage shows the initial moments of the assault, with gunshots echoing and people fleeing in panic. Bhatt and his family managed to escape and hide until safety was assured.
In immediate response, Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the attack, emphasizing the government’s resolve to combat terrorism. He ended his official visit to Saudi Arabia early in order to respond to the crisis. Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited the site, assuring that those responsible would face the harshest consequences. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah condemned the attack as an “abomination” and took charge of organizing the evacuation of stranded tourists.
The Indian government initiated several measures:
- Suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan.
- The Attari-Wagah border has been closed, and visas for Pakistani citizens have been revoked.
- Expulsion of Pakistani diplomats and reduction of diplomatic ties.
Pakistan retaliated by closing its airspace to Indian flights and suspending all bilateral treaties, including the 1972 Simla Agreement. The escalating tensions have raised international concerns, with the UN and global leaders urging restraint.
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has taken over the probe, deploying teams to reconstruct the events and identify the perpetrators. Security forces have intensified operations across Kashmir, demolishing properties linked to militants and conducting raids to apprehend suspects.
Tourism, a vital part of Kashmir’s economy, has suffered a significant blow. Authorities have closed numerous resorts, and over a million cancellations have been reported, threatening livelihoods and the region’s stability.
