Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially inaugurated the world’s tallest single-arch railway bridge in the Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir on Monday. The bridge, constructed over the Chenab River, is part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) and is being recognized as a major engineering accomplishment in India’s infrastructure sector.
Rising 359 meters above the riverbed, the bridge surpasses the height of the Eiffel Tower and is now the highest railway bridge globally. It spans approximately 1.3 kilometers and has been designed to endure extreme wind speeds, seismic activity, and other challenging environmental conditions typical of the Himalayan region.
Speaking at the inauguration, Prime Minister Modi highlighted the strategic and developmental significance of the project. “This bridge reflects the spirit of modern India and our commitment to transforming connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir,” he said.
The project was executed by Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL) in coordination with several domestic and international engineering firms. The bridge’s structure incorporates a single steel arch and is built using advanced construction techniques to ensure longevity, safety, and resilience.
The Chenab Bridge plays a key role in the USBRL project, which aims to link Kashmir Valley to the Indian Railways network, improving transportation for both civilians and defense forces. Once fully operational, it will reduce travel time, enhance accessibility to remote areas, and promote regional development through improved logistics and tourism.
Engineers involved in the project noted that the bridge has undergone multiple layers of testing and is equipped with security features that make it capable of withstanding potential threats and harsh weather conditions. Its design life is estimated to be over 120 years.
Despite facing numerous delays due to terrain, weather, and security issues, the project’s completion is being regarded as a milestone in India’s infrastructure development. Government officials stated that this inauguration reflects broader efforts to strengthen integration and progress in Jammu and Kashmir through enhanced connectivity.
The central government has consistently prioritized large-scale infrastructure projects in the Union Territory, and the successful launch of the Chenab Bridge underscores the long-term vision of linking the region more seamlessly with the rest of the country.
