New Delhi, June 7 – Mark Carney, former Governor of the Bank of Canada and a prominent advisor to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, has extended an official invitation to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to participate in the upcoming G7 Summit, set to be held in Canada later this month.
Although India is not a permanent member of the Group of Seven (G7), it has frequently been invited as a guest nation in previous years. The 2025 summit, which will convene the leaders of major global economies including the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the European Union, aims to address pressing global concerns such as economic recovery, climate change, energy sustainability, and democratic resilience.
Speaking at a public forum in Toronto, Carney highlighted India’s growing role in shaping international policy and called for stronger engagement with the South Asian nation. “India’s presence at the G7 would add substantial value to our discussions on global development, climate finance, and inclusive growth,” he stated.
The invitation is being seen as a step toward reviving strained diplomatic ties between India and Canada, which have faced recent challenges. Analysts believe the outreach could pave the way for renewed collaboration in areas like green technology, trade, healthcare innovation, and digital governance.
India’s potential inclusion in the summit reflects a broader shift by Western nations to strengthen partnerships with democratic powers in the Indo-Pacific region. As a key member of the Quad — which also includes the U.S., Japan, and Australia — India plays a pivotal role in maintaining regional balance and promoting open economic systems.
While there is no official confirmation yet from the Indian government regarding Modi’s attendance, diplomatic sources suggest the proposal is being reviewed at the highest levels. Participation in the summit would align with India’s long-term vision to expand its influence on global platforms, particularly under the country’s “Viksit Bharat 2047” roadmap for development.
