In a major boost to Indian Railways’ infrastructure modernization push, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate five redeveloped railway stations in Vadodara district on May 22, 2025. This milestone event is part of the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, aimed at transforming key railway stations into world-class multimodal transport hubs.
The five stations—Vadodara Junction, Dabhoi, Bajwa, Vishvamitri, and Makarpura—have undergone significant upgrades, focusing on enhanced passenger amenities, improved accessibility, and eco-friendly designs. The redevelopment aligns with the government’s vision of providing state-of-the-art railway facilities that cater to rising passenger expectations while preserving architectural heritage.
According to Indian Railways officials, the stations have been revamped at a cumulative cost of over ₹500 crore under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. The project introduces features such as modular waiting halls, smart ticketing systems, energy-efficient lighting, improved platforms, and seamless integration with local transport.
Key Features of Redeveloped Stations:
- Vadodara Junction: Equipped with a new concourse, escalators, digital signage, and a solar-powered roof to support the government’s sustainability goals.
- Dabhoi and Bajwa: Refurbished with upgraded platforms, modern washrooms, and accessible entry points for elderly and differently-abled passengers.
- Vishvamitri and Makarpura: Redesigned with advanced security systems, integrated foot overbridges, and passenger-friendly lounges.
The inauguration ceremony will be conducted via video conferencing, with PM Modi addressing the nation from New Delhi and connecting virtually to railway stations across India. The event is expected to be attended by Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, and other senior officials.
Speaking ahead of the event, a spokesperson from Western Railway noted, “The redevelopment is not just about beautification but also about efficiency, accessibility, and passenger experience. These stations are now equipped to handle the future needs of rail transport.”
The initiative falls under the Indian Railways’ broader modernization strategy, which includes the redevelopment of over 1,300 stations nationwide under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. This move also supports the “Make in India” and “Digital India” campaigns, with domestic contractors and smart technologies playing a key role in construction and management.
Local residents and commuters have welcomed the transformation, praising the increased cleanliness, better amenities, and aesthetic improvements. “It finally feels like our city is getting the infrastructure it deserves,” said Nisha Shah, a daily commuter from Bajwa.
