Ahmedabad, June 13: Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the site of the devastating Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad on Thursday, expressing grief over the loss of lives and personally meeting the only survivor of the tragedy. The crash, which occurred in the Meghaninagar area, resulted in the deaths of 241 individuals, making it one of the deadliest aviation disasters in India in recent years.
After landing at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, PM Modi directly proceeded to the crash site. Accompanied by senior officials and members of the disaster response team, the Prime Minister reviewed the ongoing investigation and rescue work. He also interacted with local authorities and expressed condolences to the families of the victims.
Air India has confirmed that the flight carried 241 people, including 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, 7 Portuguese nationals, and 1 Canadian national. Among them, a single passenger survived the crash — a British citizen of Indian descent.
The survivor, a 32-year-old woman, is currently receiving treatment at a private hospital in Ahmedabad. She was reportedly seated near the aircraft’s emergency exit and managed to escape the wreckage before being rescued by emergency teams. Hospital authorities have confirmed her condition as stable, though she remains under close medical supervision due to multiple injuries.
During his hospital visit, Prime Minister Modi met with the survivor and her relatives, commending her courage and assuring full government support for her recovery. He also spoke with doctors and healthcare staff, emphasizing the importance of providing the best possible care.
In a brief statement to the media, the Prime Minister said, “This is a tragic incident that has deeply affected the entire country. I have met the only survivor and offered her our full support. Our thoughts and prayers are with all the families who have lost their loved ones.”
The aircraft, a Boeing 777, was nearing its destination when it reportedly encountered a sudden technical failure. Investigative teams from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), along with experts from Boeing and international agencies, are examining the crash site and recovering flight data recorders to determine the exact cause of the incident.
Authorities are currently working on identifying the deceased and coordinating with foreign embassies to facilitate the repatriation of remains. Air India has established a dedicated helpline and support center for affected families, while the Gujarat state government has announced compensation measures and declared a day of mourning.
The Ahmedabad plane crash has sent shockwaves across the country and internationally. Prime Minister Modi’s visit underscores the gravity of the tragedy and the commitment to a thorough investigation and humanitarian response. As officials work to uncover the cause and prevent future incidents, the nation stands united in grief and support for those impacted.
