Pune, June 7, 2025 — The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has placed Pune under a yellow alert for Saturday, warning of moderate to heavy rainfall along with thunderstorms and strong winds. The alert has prompted civic authorities to take precautionary measures as the city prepares for a wet and stormy day.
The IMD’s latest forecast indicates that scattered showers are likely to continue through the day, with an increase in intensity expected by late afternoon and evening. Thunderstorms, lightning, and wind speeds ranging between 40 and 50 kilometers per hour may accompany the rain.
This change in weather is being attributed to a cyclonic circulation over the Konkan coast and surrounding areas of Madhya Maharashtra. The system is drawing in moisture-laden winds from the Arabian Sea, intensifying rainfall across the region. Meteorologists believe this may be an early sign of the monsoon’s arrival in western Maharashtra.
In response to the alert, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has activated emergency response teams and begun inspecting drainage networks to prevent waterlogging. Civic officials have also appealed to citizens to remain cautious, especially during periods of heavy rainfall or thunderstorm activity.
Residents are advised to:
- Stay indoors during intense weather,
- Avoid open fields and under-construction sites,
- Keep away from trees and electric poles during lightning,
- Follow real-time updates from official sources.
Traffic authorities have issued advisories as well, asking commuters to plan ahead and expect delays due to water accumulation on key city roads. Public transport services, including PMPML buses, are on standby for route adjustments if required.
Meanwhile, agricultural communities in Pune’s rural belts have welcomed the rainfall, seeing it as an opportunity to begin early sowing for the kharif season. However, experts caution that prolonged heavy rain could lead to soil damage if not carefully managed.
While schools and businesses remain open, several private offices are allowing flexible work arrangements to ensure employee safety. No official closures have been announced at this time.
The IMD continues to monitor the evolving weather system and will provide updates as necessary. As the monsoon approaches, authorities urge the public to stay vigilant and prepared for sudden changes in weather patterns.
