Shashi Tharoor Counters Congress Row Over Strike Remarks: “I Have Better Things to Do”

Shashi Tharoor, senior Congress leader and Member of Parliament, has responded sharply to criticism from within his party over recent comments he made regarding India’s 2016 surgical strikes. The statement, made during an overseas engagement, has triggered fresh tensions inside the Congress, raising questions about internal unity and messaging.

Tharoor had referred to the 2016 operation as the first time India had officially acknowledged a cross-border military strike in retaliation to a terrorist attack. Some party members took issue with this, interpreting it as an unintended dismissal of similar actions during the earlier UPA-led government.

Congress leaders including Pawan Khera defended the party’s record, noting that such strikes had occurred previously but were kept confidential due to strategic reasons. Former parliamentarian Udit Raj went further, accusing Tharoor of echoing the government’s narrative and undermining Congress achievements.

In response, Tharoor issued a direct statement dismissing the outrage as unnecessary. “I was clearly speaking of acknowledged counter-terrorist operations, not wartime activity. Those attacking me are either misinformed or deliberately misrepresenting my words,” he said. “I have better things to do than respond to distortions.”

The disagreement has revealed growing differences within the Congress on how to handle narratives related to national security and past governance. Tharoor, who is often seen as a diplomatic voice with an international focus, has occasionally been at odds with more traditional elements of the party.

The matter drew comments from leaders outside the party as well. Union Minister Kiren Rijiju criticized the Congress, accusing it of damaging India’s image for political reasons. He questioned whether party leaders should speak on such sensitive topics while abroad.

Observers believe this incident is another example of Congress’s struggle to present a unified position on key national matters. It also highlights the party’s ongoing internal debate over its legacy, messaging, and public image.

As of now, no formal response has been issued by the top leadership of the Congress party. Whether the party stands behind Tharoor or distances itself from his remarks could influence public perception and reveal how it plans to manage internal differences going forward.
