June 2025 — Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla has officially become the second Indian to travel to space, embarking on a historic journey as part of the Axiom-4 mission to the International Space Station (ISS). The mission, organized by Axiom Space in collaboration with NASA and SpaceX, successfully lifted off from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida earlier this week.
Shukla, a highly trained Indian Air Force officer, follows in the footsteps of Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma, who flew aboard a Soviet Soyuz mission in 1984. His selection for the Axiom-4 crew is being hailed as a significant milestone in India’s space journey and an inspiration for future generations of Indian scientists and astronauts.
Ahead of the launch, Group Captain Shukla said, “I carry with me not just instruments and equipment, but the hopes and dreams of a billion hearts.” His emotional message has since been widely shared on social media, receiving praise and support from across the country.
The Axiom-4 crew comprises astronauts from Italy, Turkey, the United States, and India. Over the course of their 14-day stay aboard the ISS, the team will conduct a series of scientific experiments and research projects focused on space medicine, Earth observation, and space technology. The mission is part of Axiom Space’s long-term plan to enable greater international collaboration in space exploration and commercial missions in low-Earth orbit.
India’s Prime Minister and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) congratulated Shukla on his achievement, calling it a proud moment for the nation. ISRO also emphasized that his participation would provide valuable insights and experience ahead of India’s ambitious Gaganyaan mission, which aims to send Indian astronauts to space aboard an indigenous spacecraft.
Shukla, who has undergone rigorous training in India and the U.S., is expected to play a key role in building global partnerships for India’s future space missions. In addition to scientific work, he will participate in live interactions with students from across India to promote science education and space awareness.
The Axiom-4 mission marks India’s entry into commercial human spaceflight programs and highlights its growing stature in the international space community. Experts believe that Shukla’s mission could act as a catalyst for India’s future collaborations with both government and private space agencies worldwide.
As the nation watches with pride, Shubhanshu Shukla’s journey represents not just a personal achievement, but a symbolic moment of national progress and aspiration in the field of space exploration.
