Three Army Personnel Killed in North Sikkim Landslide; Rescue Operations Continue Amid Adverse Weather

Sikkim landslide

A fatal landslide claimed the lives of three Indian Army soldiers at a military base in North Sikkim early Monday, following days of persistent rainfall in the region. Ongoing rescue operations are being conducted under difficult weather conditions as authorities assess the extent of the damage.

The landslide occurred at approximately 5:30 a.m. in the remote mountainous area of Mangan district, where army personnel were stationed in a forward location near the Indo-China border. A portion of the military encampment was engulfed in mud and debris as a result of the sudden landslip, triggered by relentless rain.

Army officials confirmed the deaths and stated that rescue teams were immediately mobilized. “Three soldiers lost their lives due to the landslide incident. Rescue operations are currently in progress to ensure no additional personnel are trapped,” a spokesperson from the Eastern Command reported.

Rescue Work Faces Terrain Challenges

Personnel from the Indian Army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and local administration are jointly conducting rescue efforts. However, operations are being significantly delayed by continuous rain, low visibility, and unstable ground conditions.

“Despite the difficult terrain and poor weather, our teams are doing their best to search through the affected area. All available resources have been deployed,” an NDRF officer stated.

Heavy machinery and sniffer dogs have been brought in to assist the rescue mission, and helicopters remain on standby for emergency evacuation, weather permitting.

Heightened Risk in the Himalayan Region

North Sikkim’s geographical features make it highly prone to landslides, particularly during the monsoon season. Experts have repeatedly emphasized the need for enhanced safety and monitoring systems in the region, which is both ecologically sensitive and strategically vital.

“The topography in these areas is extremely fragile. With the rise in extreme weather events, there is a growing need for climate-resilient military infrastructure,” said a retired defense officer with experience in the region.

Nation Pays Tribute

Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered his condolences, writing on social media, “Saddened by the loss of three brave soldiers in a landslide in Sikkim. Their service will always be remembered. Prayers for their families.”

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh also expressed deep sorrow and assured that all necessary support will be extended to the bereaved families.

Investigation to Follow Rescue Phase

Once the rescue phase concludes, a formal investigation is expected to be launched to understand the circumstances leading to the incident and to explore potential measures to mitigate future risks in similar high-altitude military zones.

As operations continue and the nation mourns the fallen, this tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by defense personnel posted in disaster-prone and inhospitable terrain.
