Barot Valley, Himachal Pradesh – June 12, 2025:
A viral video circulating on social media has brought to light the growing concerns over irresponsible tourism in Himachal Pradesh. The footage shows a group of tourists polluting the Lapas Waterfall area in Barot Valley, a region known for its natural serenity and ecological sensitivity.
In the video, tourists can be seen consuming alcohol, playing loud music, and carelessly littering the surroundings with plastic bottles, wrappers, and glass containers. The visuals have sparked widespread condemnation from environmental groups, local residents, and social media users.
Situated in the Mandi district, Barot Valley has become an increasingly popular destination for travelers seeking peace and nature. However, locals report that the influx of tourists in recent years has brought with it a rise in environmental damage due to lack of awareness and enforcement.
“Tourists come here to enjoy nature but often end up damaging it. The recent incident is not the first, but it’s definitely among the worst we’ve seen,” said Ramesh Chauhan, a resident and member of a local conservation group.
Environmental experts warn that improper disposal of waste, especially plastic and glass, poses a serious risk to local ecosystems. Pollution can contaminate freshwater sources, harm wildlife, and degrade the overall landscape of the region.
In response to the viral video, officials from the Himachal Pradesh Forest Department and local administrative bodies have stated that they are reviewing the footage and considering strict penalties against those responsible. Authorities have also reiterated the need for tourists to follow environmental guidelines when visiting eco-sensitive areas.
“We will not tolerate behavior that endangers our natural heritage. Surveillance and fines will be increased at all major tourist locations to curb such incidents,” an official said.
Local panchayats are also demanding the installation of signboards and educational materials to remind tourists of their responsibilities. Environmental groups are calling for a long-term strategy that includes both regulation and awareness to protect Barot Valley and other similar locations.
As the tourism season continues, the incident has reignited the discussion on sustainable travel practices and the urgent need for responsible visitor behavior in fragile hill environments.
