Volkswagen Launches Golf GTI in India at ₹46.99 Lakh

Volkswagen has officially launched the Golf GTI in India, adding a new contender to the country’s niche premium hatchback segment. The launch marks the entry of one of the German brand’s most iconic performance models into the Indian market.

The hot hatch has been priced at ₹46.99 lakh (ex-showroom) and will be offered as a completely built unit (CBU). This approach allows Volkswagen to bring the model without local production, while keeping the number of units limited under current import policies.

The India-spec Golf GTI is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine, capable of generating 241 bhp and 370 Nm of torque. Mated to a 7-speed DSG automatic transmission, the car can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in approximately 6.4 seconds.

Built on the brand’s MQB Evo architecture, the GTI benefits from improved handling dynamics and ride quality. Performance features include an adaptive chassis control system, electronic limited-slip differential, and multiple drive modes, offering a tailored driving experience.

The exterior design stays true to the GTI’s global styling, with a red-striped front grille, LED matrix headlights, and 18-inch alloy wheels. The classic hot hatch stance is enhanced by sporty bumpers, dual exhaust outlets, and a roof-mounted spoiler.

Inside the cabin, the GTI is fitted with GTI-pattern sport seats, a fully digital instrument cluster, and a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone connectivity. Safety equipment includes six airbags, adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, and automatic emergency braking.

Speaking about the launch, Ashish Gupta, Brand Director of Volkswagen Passenger Cars India, said, “The Golf GTI is a symbol of Volkswagen’s legacy in performance motoring. With this launch, we aim to reach customers who value precision, power, and everyday usability in a premium vehicle.”

Bookings for the Golf GTI are now open through select Volkswagen dealerships and the company’s online portal. Deliveries are expected to begin in July 2025.

Though priced at a premium, the Golf GTI is likely to appeal to enthusiasts looking for a blend of power, practicality, and exclusivity. It will indirectly compete with models such as the Mini Cooper S, which occupies a similar market niche.

This launch is part of Volkswagen’s broader plan to introduce global performance models to Indian buyers and expand its presence in the high-end hatchback segment.
