Not too long ago, the internet felt like the closest thing to a truly free space that people had ever made. There are no borders. No one to keep you out. No one person or group could tell you what you could read, share, or say. Even though it was loud and messy, that openness felt like something worth keeping safe.
That time is coming to an end, slowly and quietly, with the best of intentions.
In 2026, governments all over the world are writing, debating, and passing big new laws to control how people talk to each other online and on digital platforms. Stopping false information, fighting cybercrime, and keeping foreign interference out of elections are all reasonable goals. But the tools that are being suggested to reach those goals are making civil liberties advocates, technology experts, and regular people worried that the cure might be worse than the disease.
Why We Need Rules
It’s important to take governments’ worries seriously because many of them are real. This will help you understand why they are going this way.
False information has caused harm that can be measured and documented. Misinformation about health during the COVID-19 pandemic discouraged vaccinations, and some individuals died as a direct result. Coordinated disinformation campaigns, often originating from abroad, inundated social media with fabricated content designed to influence voters during elections in numerous nations.
Policymakers pushing for cybersecurity and digital governance laws say that the voluntary, self-regulatory model that tech companies have used for the last 20 years has not worked. Platforms want to get as many people as possible to use their services, and anger and fear are more likely to do that than calm, accurate information. The argument is that asking companies to monitor content that makes them money is like asking a casino to stop people from gambling.
The European Union’s Digital Services Act, which went into effect in 2024, is the most ambitious attempt so far to hold big platforms legally responsible. That question has answers and protections in a healthy democracy with strong judicial oversight. In a nation characterized by a tenuous democracy, an authoritarian-inclined government, or a compromised judiciary, the identical legal framework serves as an instrument for quelling dissent, stifling opposing viewpoints, and regulating the information accessible to citizens.
People who don’t like the current wave of internet regulation debate say that the language used in many proposed laws is too vague and could be dangerous. “False information,” “harmful content,” and “foreign interference” sound fine in a press release, but they can be used as weapons by governments that have something to hide. People have used India’s IT rules to tell platforms to take down posts that criticize government policy. Russia’s internet laws have made it so that the country’s own internet is cut off from the rest of the world. Nigeria shut down Twitter, now X, for seven months because the site wouldn’t take down a tweet from the president.
These are not rare cases. Giving governments broad, poorly defined powers over digital speech will lead to these outcomes.
The Tough Spot for Tech Companies
The technology companies are stuck in the middle of this debate, and their position is worse than what they usually say in public.
Platforms like Meta, Google, and X really want to look like they are working with regulators on the other hand. Finding the Right Balance
The debate over internet regulation is, at its best, a real effort to deal with one of the biggest problems with modern democratic governance: how do you keep people safe from real digital harms without making it easier for the government to control the internet?
It is possible to find that balance, but it takes something that is not often present in policy discussions: accuracy. Regulation can happen without censorship if laws focus on specific, well-defined harms and have appropriate punishments, independent judicial oversight, meaningful transparency requirements, and strong appeal processes.
Giving governments broad, discretionary power over what their citizens can say and read online is something that history shows will always be abused.
The internet was never perfect. But the freedoms it gave were real. It’s hard, unglamorous, and detail-oriented work to protect those freedoms while dealing with real threats. This is also exactly the work that needs to be done right now.
