Zomato Launches Electric Vehicle Fleet in Delhi to Strengthen Green Delivery Mission

Zomato green delivery mission

New Delhi, June 9:
Food delivery platform Zomato has launched a dedicated fleet of electric vehicles (EVs) in Delhi, marking a major step towards its goal of sustainable and environmentally-friendly operations. The initiative is part of Zomato’s broader “Mission Sustainable Delivery” strategy aimed at significantly reducing its carbon footprint by 2030.

According to the company, the rollout will initially include electric two-wheelers and e-bicycles specifically designed for last-mile food delivery. These vehicles will be deployed in partnership with EV logistics firms and local startups. To support the fleet, Zomato has also established charging hubs at key locations across the capital.

“Delhi has always been a key market for us, and with its supportive EV policies and high order density, it makes perfect sense to begin scaling our electric fleet here,” said Zomato’s Chief Sustainability Officer. “We aim to transition a large part of our delivery operations to electric mobility in the coming years.”

This initiative is aligned with the Delhi government’s Electric Vehicle Policy, which seeks to make the capital the EV hub of India. The policy, introduced in 2020, aims for 25% of new vehicle registrations in Delhi to be electric by 2024. Zomato’s move is expected to complement the government’s efforts and encourage other players in the logistics and e-commerce sectors to follow suit.

Industry analysts have praised the development, citing the rising need for clean mobility solutions in metropolitan cities battling severe air pollution. Delivery fleets, which constitute a significant portion of urban traffic, are often powered by fossil fuels, contributing to harmful emissions.

In addition to the environmental benefits, Zomato is also offering financial support and training to its delivery partners to ease the transition to EVs. The company emphasized its commitment to inclusivity in sustainability, stating, “We are ensuring that our delivery partners are well-equipped and supported throughout this green shift.”

This isn’t Zomato’s first foray into electric mobility. The company had earlier announced its vision to go fully electric by the end of the decade and has been testing EV-based deliveries in select cities.

The deployment of the EV fleet in Delhi is expected to not only reduce operational emissions but also set a precedent for eco-conscious practices in the food delivery industry.
