August 30,2025: Heavy rainfall in Jammu and Kashmir on Friday triggered two separate tragedies, claiming the lives of at least eleven people in Reasi and Ramban districts.
In Reasi, a landslide struck the Mahore area, burying a house under debris and killing seven members of one family. Rescue teams worked through the day to recover the bodies, while officials confirmed that women and children were among the dead. Local authorities said no other residents were reported missing in the incident, but operations continued as a precaution.
Meanwhile, in Ramban district, a cloudburst in a remote village left four people dead and several others missing. The sudden surge of water swept through residential areas, damaging houses and livestock. Teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), assisted by police and local volunteers, launched search and rescue operations to locate those unaccounted for.
The downpour also caused road blockages at multiple points across the region, disrupting movement along major routes and delaying relief work. Authorities issued advisories urging residents in vulnerable locations to move to safer ground as more rain is expected over the weekend.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha expressed condolences and directed district officials to provide immediate assistance to the affected families. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also conveyed sympathies, stating that relief operations were being closely monitored.
Meteorological officials have warned of further heavy rainfall in parts of Jammu and Kashmir, raising the risk of additional landslides and flash floods. Emergency shelters have been set up in affected areas, and disaster response teams remain deployed to handle any fresh incidents.
The two incidents have once again highlighted the vulnerability of the Himalayan region to extreme weather events during the monsoon season, with experts stressing the need for stronger disaster preparedness and mitigation efforts.
